Welcome back to another episode of the Generations of Hunt podcast, where we dive into the bucking truth of hunting and outdoor adventures. I'm joined by my co-host, Matt, and we kick things off by discussing the recent weather changes and how it's the perfect time to start hiking for sheds. We share some personal anecdotes about the brutal cold and the excitement of finding sheds. We then transition into a discussion about deer holding their antlers longer due to a second rut and the impact of a mild winter. Matt shares his buddy's theory on this, and we debate the scientific evidence behind it. We also touch on the importance of starting early to find sheds before the state land gets crowded with people and their dogs. Next, we delve into the recent Team USA ice fishing tournament held in Michigan, where the US team disappointingly placed sixth. We joke about the challenges of releasing fish from the ice and the potential of making ice fishing an Olympic sport. The conversation takes an interesting turn as we discuss survival shows. We ponder whether we would participate in one and share our thoughts on the mental and physical challenges involved. We also talk about the strategies and hardships faced by contestants on shows like "Alone" and "Survivor." We then shift gears to discuss the National Deer Association's findings on the distance between shed antlers. According to their research, 56% of match sets are found within 10 yards of each other, which is a fascinating insight for shed hunters. Our discussion moves to the impact of weather on deer movement, referencing a new MSU Deer Lab study. We debate the effectiveness of hunting apps and the importance of actual deer sightings over predictive models. We also touch on the controversy surrounding new solar panel projects in Michigan, particularly in Gaylord. We discuss the role of organizations like BHA in pausing these projects and the potential impact on public lands. Finally, we dive into the topic of antler point restrictions (APRs) and their effectiveness in encouraging hunters to shoot more does. We reference another MSU study that suggests APRs do not significantly impact doe harvest rates.

Welcome back to another episode of the Generations of Hunt podcast! Today, I'm joined by my good friend , Dave, who helped me out with the "Stay Out September" series. We're here to catch up on how his hunting season went and to share some of the lessons learned along the way. Dave kicked off the season with high hopes, having done extensive winter, spring, and summer scouting. His wife rescheduled a trip to Disney, giving him a full week in early October to hunt. Dave set up a solo hunt camp in Southern Michigan, sleeping in a minivan and braving the cold. Despite the challenging conditions, it was a rewarding experience that taught him a lot about hunting new terrain. Dave attended the Bowhunter Chronicles camp for the first time, which was a mix of camaraderie and serious hunting. He faced new terrain challenges but enjoyed the experience of hunting with a group. One memorable moment was his creative tree selection for a hunt, which involved climbing a spindly tree to get to a massive oak. Dave had two main spots for the rut season. The first spot was disrupted by another hunter who unknowingly used the same trail as the target buck. Despite this, Dave learned valuable information about the buck's behavior, such as the early opening of scrape lines. The second spot was a Metro Detroit public land property where Dave had patterned a buck over two years. Despite setting up a camera and hunting strategically, he faced challenges from other hunters and even had his camera tampered with. However, he still managed to gather crucial data for future hunts. Early Season: Dave confirmed that his scouting was accurate, even if the timing was slightly off. Rut Season: He learned that bucks can open scrape lines earlier than expected and that human presence can significantly alter deer behavior. Public Land Hunting: Encounters with other hunters can be both respectful and disruptive, highlighting the importance of adaptability. Dave's season was a mix of highs and lows, but it was filled with valuable lessons and experiences. From solo camping in a minivan to navigating the complexities of public land hunting, Dave's journey offers insights for hunters of all levels. Generations of Hunt podcast, we kick off a new sub-series with a special guest, Matt Michalek, affectionately known as Matt.com. Matt is a tech-savvy hunter from Michigan who brings a wealth of knowledge to our discussion, especially when it comes to data and industry trends. We dive into several hot topics, starting with the recent developments in Michigan's deer management and regulations. Matt sheds light on the new Deer Management Council and the upcoming recommendations that could impact the 2024 hunting season. We also discuss the controversial solar farm projects and their implications for local wildlife. One of the key points we explore is the impact of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) on the deer population. Matt provides insights into the data, revealing that while EHD had a significant impact, it wasn't as devastating as some feared. We also touch on the ongoing debate about baiting and its legality, with Matt sharing his personal experiences and observations. We delve into the statistics of deer harvests, particularly during the muzzleloader season, and the surprising trend of hunters using their combo tags for antlerless deer. This leads to a broader discussion about the need for better population management and the role hunters play in conservation. The episode also covers the proposed changes in hunting license prices, including the controversial increase for senior hunters and the adjustments for non-resident tags. We debate the potential impact of these changes on hunter participation and conservation efforts. Throughout the episode, we emphasize the importance of understanding and adapting to new regulations, as well as the need for hunters to take an active role in managing the deer population. Matt's data-driven approach provides a fresh perspective on these issues, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of hunting in Michigan. In this episode of Generations of Hunt, I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt, one of our seasoned big buck hunters. We kicked things off discussing the temptations of Black Friday sales, especially when it comes to upgrading hunting gear. Matt shared his recent gear changes, including his switch to the Maverick saddle and the Ranger 22 pack, which have significantly improved his hunting experience. We then dove into Matt's hunting season, which started off slow in October due to concerns about CWD and EHD affecting the deer population. Matt spent the early part of the season exploring public lands and attending the Bowhunter Chronicle camp, where he finally started seeing some deer activity. By late October, he began getting promising pictures of bucks on his family's property, which reignited his hunting fervor. Matt recounted the thrilling hunt on November 2nd, where he successfully shot a massive buck after a brief but intense encounter. He detailed the meticulous process of tracking and recovering the deer, which ended with a short and successful track job. The buck, a mainframe eight with a kicker, turned out to be his biggest to date, and Matt shared his excitement about getting it mounted. We also touched on the broader aspects of hunting, including the challenges of finding the perfect backpack and the importance of having the right gear. Matt and I discussed the potential changes in hunting regulations, such as the idea of a one-buck rule or an earn-a-buck system, and reminisced about the nostalgia of traditional muzzleloader seasons. Welcome back to the Generations of Hunt Podcast! This is your host, Joe. I want to start by apologizing for the unexpected hiatus. After returning from deer camp, I received the unfortunate news of a close relative's passing, which threw everything into disarray. On top of that, work has been incredibly hectic, with seven-day workweeks and ten-hour days. Any free time I had was spent hunting, leaving no room for the podcast. I know these are just excuses, but I wanted to explain the situation to everyone who's been wondering why I suddenly stopped. Moving forward, I plan to release episodes biweekly until the end of the year. After that, I might revamp the schedule and direction of the podcast. Balancing work, parenting, school, and hunting has been challenging, but I am committed to continuing the podcast. Matt is currently in Missouri hunting and has also been busy with trips to the Dakotas for pheasant hunting. As for me, I'm gearing up for the opening gun day here in Michigan and looking forward to spending time at deer camp with family and friends. It's always a great experience to unwind and learn from the older generation. This season has been eventful. I had a great time at Adam from Bowhunter Chronicles' camp, hunting with Nate from Michigan Wild and the BDS Outdoors crew. Deer camp is always a blast, and I highly recommend starting one, even if it's just with a few buddies on public land. I've had some issues with trespassers on my private land, which has been frustrating. Despite these challenges, I've managed to have a successful season so far. I shot a doe a few weeks ago, and it was a clean and quick kill. I also shot a buck, but I'll save the details for a future episode. Work has been demanding, but I promise to get the podcast back

hello, everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Generations That Hunt podcast. It's October, and you know what that means—whitetail season is open in Michigan and most other states. It's a busy time for all of us hunters, and I've been swamped with house renovations and school, but I'm excited to get out there soon. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with my buddy Matt , who is joining our team to help with filming for our YouTube channel. Matt recently went on an elk hunt in September, and we discussed his experiences and the challenges he faced. Matt shared his background, growing up hunting on his family's 60-acre property in southwest Michigan. He didn't have a traditional deer camp experience but got into public land hunting in his mid-20s. His first big game hunt on public land was an over-the-counter elk hunt in Colorado, which he described as a life-changing experience. We talked about the importance of having a good support system during hunting trips and how crucial it is to stay positive, even when things don't go as planned. Matt's recent elk hunt was tough—they didn't see a single elk—but he emphasized the value of the experience and the camaraderie with his hunting buddies. We also touched on the logistics of planning out-of-state hunts, the importance of applying for points in various states, and the dream of hunting in Alaska someday. Matt's optimism and passion for hunting are truly inspiring, and I'm excited to see the content he'll create for our YouTube channel. we dive into the final week of our "Stay Out September" series, focusing on the importance of getting your house in order before the hunting season kicks off. With opening day just a week away, we discuss the need to balance our passion for hunting with our responsibilities at home, especially for those of us with families. We emphasize the significance of completing household chores and projects, often referred to as the "honey-do list," to ensure that our spouses and families are happy and supportive of our time spent in the woods. Joe shares his experiences as a married man with kids, while I reflect on my situation as a married individual without children. We both agree that being intentional with our time and responsibilities can lead to a more enjoyable hunting season. Throughout the episode, we touch on strategies for planning ahead, such as using weather apps to anticipate hunting conditions and organizing our schedules to accommodate family needs. We also highlight the importance of communication with our partners, ensuring they feel involved and appreciated. As we wrap up the series, we reflect on what we've learned, the value of preparation, and the importance of community among hunters. We encourage our listeners to take the time to get organized, enjoy the upcoming hunting season, and remember that the relationships we nurture at home are just as important as the deer we pursue in the woods. Good luck to everyone on opening day!

I had the pleasure of welcoming back Alex and Jeff from VPA, a company known for their high-quality broadheads. With the hunting season underway, we dove into the perennial debate about which broadheads to choose, especially since we've been using VPA's products and have been thoroughly impressed. We kicked off the conversation by discussing the busy nature of their operations, even during what many consider the off-season. Jeff and Alex shared insights into the materials used in their broadheads, specifically the differences between 1045 carbon tool steel and the more premium S7 steel. They explained how each material affects edge retention and sharpening, emphasizing that while the 1045 is easier to sharpen, the S7 holds an edge longer, making it a favorite among their customers. Dave posed some great questions about the durability and performance of broadheads, particularly in relation to different game animals. Jeff highlighted that their broadheads are designed to withstand tough conditions, even when shot through bone, and that ethical hunting is a core value for VPA. They also discussed the importance of testing and feedback in their product development process, ensuring that every broadhead meets high standards before hitting the market. We explored the trend of broadhead weights and sizes, noting that while lighter and faster options are popular, there's a growing appreciation for heavier setups that provide better penetration. Jeff and Alex shared their commitment to creating durable, ethical products that hunters can rely on for multiple seasons, rather than disposable options that require frequent replacement. The episode wrapped up with a discussion on the innovative Omega broadhead, which features replaceable bleeders designed for durability and re-sharpening. Jeff and Alex's passion for their products and dedication to customer feedback was evident throughout our conversation, making it clear that VPA is committed to providing hunters with the best possible tools for ethical hunting. We've covered getting into shape, shooting practice, and running through your gear in previous weeks. Now, it's time to focus on the minutiae of your setup, especially your clothing and ensuring everything is quiet and efficient. Clothing Prep : Lay out all your hunting clothes, from base layers to outerwear, and check for any gaps or needed replacements. Consider the weight changes and ensure everything fits well. Socks : Don't underestimate the importance of good socks. Merino wool socks are highly recommended for their moisture-wicking properties. Totes for Organization : Using totes to organize your gear by season and type can make your prep more efficient. Silencing Gear : We discussed the importance of reducing noise from your gear. Using stealth strips, hockey tape, and paracord can help silence metal parts and prevent unnatural sounds in the woods. Testing for Noise : Record yourself walking with your gear to identify and address any noise issues. Lighted Nocks : Check your lighted nocks for cracks and ensure the batteries are fresh. Practice with lighted nocks to ensure accuracy. Battery Management : Replace batteries in your rangefinder, sight lights, and other electronic gear before the season starts. Self-Filming Tips : If you plan to film your hunts, ensure all your equipment is charged and ready. Practice setting up your camera arm and other gear to avoid frustration in the field. Welcome back to another episode of the Generations of Hunt Podcast! This week, Matt and I are recording from the garage, so bear with us if the audio isn't perfect. We dive into some exciting new gear updates.Matt recently got the Heat Boost Huntworth bibs and jacket for my birthday, but with the current 80-degree weather, I haven't had a chance to test them out. Matt shares his thoughts on the new VPA Broadheads, specifically the three-blade fixed head, and we discuss the benefits of different broadhead setups. Matt has made a significant change in his hunting setup, moving from a stand to a saddle. He talks about the advantages of the Latitude sticks, which are much lighter than his previous gear, and how this change will impact his hunting strategy this season. I share a wild story about almost getting scammed while trying to buy a new Hoyt bow. After a series of suspicious interactions and a fake motorcycle accident, I finally managed to get the bow from a legitimate seller. This experience has made me more cautious about online transactions, and I emphasize the importance of using secure payment methods like PayPal goods and services. With September here, our excitement for deer season is ramping up. We discuss the early opening of various states' hunting seasons and the unusual early crop turn this year. This could make for an interesting mid-season, especially with the potential EHG scare due to the wet summer. Matt shares his struggles with getting a successful food plot going this year. Despite multiple attempts and different seed brands, heavy rains have thwarted his efforts. However, he's optimistic about his latest planting and hopes it will attract deer come October. We also touch on our out-of-state hunting plans. Matt will be heading to South Dakota for a pheasant hunt and later to Missouri for deer hunting. Looking ahead, we have trips planned to Kansas and Iowa, which promise better chances at larger bucks compared to Michigan. As we wrap up, we reflect on the upcoming season and our strategies. Whether it's focusing on private land or exploring new public land spots, we're both eager to see what this hunting season has in store. we dive into the second week of our "Stay Out September" series. As we gear up for the youth hunt and special hunts for veterans and disabled individuals, we wish everyone the best of luck. This week, our focus is on broadheads and tuning your bow for optimal performance. We start by emphasizing the importance of tuning your bow to ensure proper arrow flight, regardless of whether you prefer fixed blades or mechanical broadheads. I share my personal experiences with different broadheads, including the Toughhead 3-blade, Annihilators, and Sever Robusto, and stress that the key is to make sure your setup is dialed in. We discuss the importance of checking your bow for any issues, such as serving separations or D-loop problems, and the need to address these immediately. We also highlight the significance of practicing with your broadheads at various distances to ensure they fly true, as they can behave differently from field points. For those using fixed blades, we delve into the nuances of sharpening techniques and the tools required, such as sandpaper, diamond plates, and sharpening guides. We also touch on the importance of having replacement blades and O-rings for mechanical broadheads to ensure you're always prepared. We kicked off the episode by catching up with Jordan, who has been incredibly busy with various media engagements, including radio shows, newspapers, magazines, and podcasts. He’s been actively involved in addressing deer management issues in Michigan, particularly focusing on the policies affecting the Upper Peninsula (UP). Jordan shared his frustrations about the recent deer management decisions made by the Natural Resources Commission (NRC). Despite the hard work and data-backed recommendations from his Deer Management Initiative (DMI) team, the NRC ultimately dismissed their suggestions in favor of outdated and ineffective policies. This decision was influenced by longstanding relationships and political gamesmanship, undermining the integrity of the process. We delved into the complexities of deer management in the UP, discussing the challenges posed by a high predator population, habitat loss, and the impact of severe winters. Jordan emphasized the importance of a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a healthy deer herd and criticized the outdated mentality of protecting does at all costs. He argued for a more balanced approach, including conservative doe harvests and a one-buck rule to improve herd health and sustainability. Our conversation also touched on the broader issue of hunter mentality. Jordan highlighted the need for a shift from a "me-first" attitude to a stewardship mentality, where hunters see themselves as guardians of the resource, focused on conservation and sharing the experience with others. We wrapped up the episode by reflecting on the deeper meaning of hunting. For Jordan, hunting is not just about the harvest but about reconnecting with nature, finding peace, and restoring his soul. It’s a journey that goes beyond the gear and the kill, offering a profound sense of fulfillment and connection to the natural world. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Generations of Hunt. We hope you found Jordan’s insights as enlightening and thought-provoking as we did. Stay tuned for more discussions on hunting, conservation, and the great outdoors! I had the pleasure of being hosted by David Riley in his home, surrounded by the impressive Michigan bucks he's harvested over the years. We kicked off the conversation by discussing the significance of taxidermy and the stories behind each mount. David shared heartfelt anecdotes, including the emotional journey of hunting after his accident, emphasizing that the experience and memories often outweigh the size of the rack. As we transitioned into the main topic, David provided insights into his current preparations for the upcoming hunting season. He talked about his meticulous process of locating targets, shooting practice, and packing for his first out-of-state hunt in September. David's approach to hunting is deeply rooted in the experience and the process, rather than just the end goal of filling a tag. We delved into the importance of out-of-state hunts and how they can be a learning experience. David encouraged hunters to take the plunge and go for it, even if it means starting with smaller, less popular states before tackling the big ones like Iowa or Kansas. He shared his own experiences of hunting in various states and how each trip has contributed to his growth as a hunter. David also provided a detailed breakdown of his strategy for an early September opener. He emphasized the importance of glassing for two evenings and one morning before the season starts, to locate and pattern the deer. His plan involves a mix of light scouting, glassing, and being mobile to adapt to the conditions and deer movements. Welcome to the latest episode of the Generations of Hunt Podcast, part of our ongoing "Stay Out September" mini-series. This episode is packed with valuable insights and tips to help you prepare for the upcoming hunting season. I’m joined by Dave, and together we dive into various topics that are crucial for hunters as we approach the fall. We received some listener feedback about our previous episode, specifically about the importance of water sources for deer. Dave and I discussed how water availability can vary greatly depending on the terrain and location. For instance, in swampy areas, water is abundant and not a key focus, whereas in drier regions, watering holes can be critical. As we approach the end of summer, it's crucial to finalize your hunting preparations: Camera Checks : Ensure your trail cameras are set up correctly, with fresh batteries and ample SD card space. Tree Prep : Clear your access trails and finalize any tree stand setups. Remember, on public land, stands can be placed starting September 1st. Hunter Pressure : Be aware of other hunters in your area. Look for signs like stands, trail cameras, and human activity to adjust your strategy accordingly. It's essential to keep practicing with your bow. Whether you're using a compound or a traditional bow, make sure everything is dialed in and ready for the season. Looking ahead to September, we'll focus on: Physical Training : Preparing your body for the demands of hunting. Gear Check : Ensuring all your equipment is in top condition. Broadheads : Selecting and preparing your broadheads. Home Life : Balancing hunting preparations with family and personal responsibilities. First, a big thank you to our sponsors: Huntworth Camo : Check out their new camo patterns, which offer great quality at a reasonable price. VPA : Their new Omega broadheads with bleeders are out, and they look promising. Latitude : The Maverick saddle is a top-notch product, and you can save some money using our code GTH. we had an engaging conversation about Matt's hunting journey and experiences. Matt has primarily hunted on public land, with a brief stint on private land, and has traveled extensively across the United States to pursue his passion. He found success more quickly in other states with larger and older deer populations. However, Matt emphasized that his love for hunting is driven more by the adventure and the challenge of exploring new terrains than by the size of the bucks. Matt also discussed his approach to scouting and hunting, highlighting the importance of finding thick bedding areas, pinch points, and scrapes. He shared his experiences of hunting in various states, including Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri, and his plans for the upcoming season. We touched on the pressures hunters face, especially from social media, and the importance of enjoying the process rather than focusing solely on the kill. Matt shared his insights on how this mindset shift has made him a better and more consistent hunter. Towards the end of our conversation, Matt talked about his mobile hunting setup, which includes a customized 4Runner that serves as his "Mobile Motel 2.0." He also shared his thoughts on the ideal duration for hunting trips and the balance between preparation and adaptability. https://www.instagram.com/mobilehuntersdojo?igsh=MTFiOXZ4ams5ZGVuaw== Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohuntnew omega heads with bleeders out now!!https://vparchery.com/collections/allVPA Code GTH10Latitude Outdoors- www.latitudeoutdoors.com code GTH Introducing the ultimate lightweight, compact option: the Maverick. we dive into week three of our "Stay Out of September" (SOS) series, focusing on the critical aspects of preparing for the upcoming hunting season. With just six weeks left, it's crunch time, and we discuss the importance of getting your gear in order, including shooting your bow, tuning your arrows, and preparing your broadheads. We emphasize the significance of analyzing data from trail cameras and understanding the shifts in deer movement as the season progresses. It's essential not to get discouraged if certain cameras aren't showing activity yet, as some spots are better suited for later in the season. The main focus of this week is on food sources. We talk about the importance of speed scouting to check if oaks are dropping acorns or if apple trees are producing. Understanding the cycles of these food sources is crucial, as what was hot last year might not be this year. We also discuss the importance of knowing your terrain and how local agriculture can impact deer movement. For those with private land, we touch on the importance of maintaining food plots and ensuring they are well-prepared for the season. This includes overseeding if necessary and creating access trails to improve your chances of a successful hunt. We also highlight the importance of checking your trail cameras, replacing batteries, and ensuring they are positioned correctly. Using tools like SD card readers can help you make adjustments on the fly, reducing the need for multiple trips and minimizing disturbance. As always, we remind our listeners to practice shooting their bows, especially from elevated positions, to ensure they are ready for the real hunting scenarios. any questions please feel free to reach out to GTH or Dave https://www.instagram.com/barefootdave_?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt https://vparchery.com/collections/all VPA Code GTH10 Latitude Outdoors- www.latitudeoutdoors.com code GTH check out the new camo Vertek!!! In this episode, we are joined by Nate Seller from Huntworth Camo and Average Jack Archery. Nate is a remarkable individual who runs his own archery shop and is deeply involved in the hunting industry. We’ve been eagerly waiting to have him on the show, especially with the recent launch of Huntworth’s new camo pattern, Vertek. Nate dives deep into the intricate process of developing a camo pattern, which is far more complex than one might think. It took nearly three years to bring Vertek to life, and Nate explains the balance between traditional twig-and-leaf designs and modern digital patterns. He also shares insights into the extensive testing and feedback that went into perfecting the pattern, ensuring it works across various terrains and hunting scenarios. We also discuss the affordability and quality of Huntworth gear. Nate emphasizes that despite the high-quality materials and innovative designs, Huntworth products remain accessible to the average hunter. He highlights the importance of practical features like pocket placement and durability, which are often overlooked but crucial for hunters. Additionally, we touch on Huntworth’s Heat Boost technology, which uses graphene-infused fabrics to retain body heat efficiently. This innovation allows for thinner, less bulky garments that still provide exceptional warmth, making them ideal for bow hunters. Towards the end of the episode, we shift gears to talk about Nate’s archery shop, Average Jack Archery. Nate shares his journey from starting as a hobbyist to running a full-fledged archery shop. He offers valuable advice for hunters, including the importance of timely bow maintenance and the challenges of last-minute repairs. Overall, this episode is packed with valuable insights for hunters and archery enthusiasts. Nate’s passion for the industry and his dedication to quality and innovation shine through, making this a must-listen episode. In this episode of the Generations Hunt Podcast, I sit down with Dave McChesney to discuss an exciting new project aimed at helping hunters prepare for the upcoming season. Dave, who has transitioned from a traditional hunter to a mobile hunter, shares his insights and experiences. We introduce the concept of "Stay Out September" (SOS), a framework designed to ensure hunters complete their preparations in August, allowing the woods to settle before the season starts. Dave emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation, especially for new hunters who might not realize the extensive work required before the season begins. We discuss the necessity of scouting, setting up trail cameras, and preparing gear well in advance. Dave provides detailed advice on camera setup, including the use of paracord instead of straps to reduce visibility and the importance of keeping cameras clean and well-maintained. Throughout the episode, we stress the importance of historical data and the need to adapt based on real-time observations. We also touch on the benefits of gaining access permissions from private landowners to improve hunting strategies on public lands. Week 1: Planning starts now What about no previous scouting or spot prep? Get out there as much as possible Find early season food sources Stay out of bedding areas you plan to hunt early season Identify rut cruising spots Set cams Camera inventory. Do you have enough SD cards and batteries? Are your straps in good condition? Can you switch to paracord to hide them more? Good Sit Mobile mounts to hang them high. Clean the lenses and flash. Are you going to paint them? Pick out your spots. How many cameras do you have? Do you have soaker spots for season long inventory? What spots are you planning on hunting early season? Do you need to set mock scrapes? Do you have your scents ready? Are your trees prepped? Access mapped out? Proper wind identified? Do you need any last minute work done on your bow? Shops will be packed! New strings and repairs will take longer. Get ahead of the pressure. Shoot your bow! any questions please feel free to reach out to GTH or Dave https://www.instagram.com/barefootdave_?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt https://vparchery.com/collections/all VPA Code GTH10 Latitude Outdoors- www.latitudeoutdoors.com code GTH Huntworth camo - https://huntworthgear.com

took our recording outdoors due to some unfortunate circumstances with our podcast studio. Our studio is currently out of commission because of some damage to our gear, and we are in the process of removing a pool that was installed. Despite the challenges, we are enjoying the outdoor vibe, even though it might affect the audio quality. The main topic of this episode was food plotting. I shared my unconventional methods for creating food plots without high-tech tools. Despite the challenges, such as dealing with flooding, the clover I planted has started to grow, and I am optimistic about its success. We also discussed the importance of shooting does to manage the deer population and the challenges of changing the mentality around this practice. We touched on the recent changes to the youth hunt regulations, expressing our disappointment with the decision to eliminate the ability to hunt bucks during the youth hunt. We believe this change could negatively impact the future generation of hunters. Additionally, we discussed the challenges faced by disabled veterans who are also affected by this regulation change. Overall, this episode was a mix of updates, personal experiences, and discussions on hunting regulations and practices. We hope our listeners can bear with us during this transitional period and continue to enjoy our content. ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt https://vparchery.com/collections/all VPA Code GTH10 Latitude Outdoors www.latitudeoutdoors.com code GTH Huntworth camo - https://huntworthgear.com

We also touched on the importance of having a good vibe in the studio and the challenges of upgrading equipment. Bret and I then delved into a more serious discussion about the creative struggles we face as podcasters. Joe opened up about feeling creatively constipated and the difficulty of maintaining a fresh and engaging podcast. We talked about the seasonal decline in podcast listenership, particularly in the hunting community, and speculated on why that might be. We also explored the challenges of scheduling guests and the frustration that comes with last-minute cancellations. Joe shared his thoughts on the importance of being reliable and how it affects the quality and consistency of podcast episodes. Bret helps Joe with his creative block, I shared some of my own strategies for staying creative, such as writing down every idea, no matter how silly it might seem. We discussed the importance of having an output for creative ideas and not being afraid to try new things, even if they might seem cringy at first. Towards the end, we brainstormed some potential changes Joe could make to his podcast, like a brand refresh or adding new elements to keep things exciting. We also touched on the idea of bringing more people onto the podcast team to share the workload and bring in fresh perspectives. In this episode, I cover a variety of topics, starting with an update on my recent activities. I discuss the challenges of balancing family life with my passion for hunting and archery, especially with events like the Total Archery Challenge (TAC) coming up. If you're attending TAC, feel free to hit me up; I'll be around shooting and hanging out with various vendors like VPA and Latitude. I also touch on some of the frustrations with the exclusivity and ticketing process for events like TAC, and the potential need for more accessible options. Additionally, I share my thoughts on the recent changes in hunting regulations, such as Iowa's new trail camera rules for public land, and how these changes might affect us. On a lighter note, I recount a funny yet chaotic story involving a skunk, my dogs, and the aftermath of dealing with the skunk's spray. It's been a wild few weeks, to say the least! Looking ahead, I'm contemplating my hunting plans for the fall, including the possibility of an out-of-state hunt. I'm also focusing on getting back into shape after a period of unhealthy eating habits due to a busy schedule. ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt https://vparchery.com/collections/all VPA Code GTH10 Latitude Outdoors Our partner shoutout goes to Latitude Outdoors for their amazing gear, platforms, and saddles. We had a deep dive discussion with Jordan Hoover and Bob Jones from the Michigan Bowhunter Association about the Michigan DNR Deer Management Initiative. Here are three key takeaways from this insightful episode: Importance of Grassroots Input : The podcast guests highlighted the significance of including independent, unaffiliated individuals in decision-making processes related to deer management. This approach ensures a diverse range of perspectives and input, ultimately leading to more well-rounded decisions. Challenges with Timelines : One major challenge discussed was the aggressive timeline set by the commission for the Deer Management Initiative. The short timeframe limited the depth of discussions and decision-making, emphasizing the need for adequate time to address complex issues effectively. Stewardship and Education : The conversation also touched upon the importance of stewardship and education in hunting practices. It was noted that conscious harvest decisions and a focus on the benefit of the resource are crucial for sustainable deer management practices. This episode provided valuable insights into the complexities of deer management and the need for a balanced approach that considers both the resource and the hunting community. Welcome back to another episode of the Generations Hunt Podcast. In this episode, Matt and Joe dive deep into our turkey hunting experiences here in Michigan, sharing the highs and lows of our recent hunts. The turkey season is in full swing, and we kicked off the episode discussing the current state of the season, with some areas just opening up for public land hunting. Our hunting tales began with an opening day filled with excitement and a bit of chaos. Despite a rocky start, forgetting turkey calls and dealing with the elements, we encountered several turkeys, experiencing close calls that kept us on the edge of our seats. We discussed our strategies, the challenges of hunting in dense woods with plenty of downfalls, and the thrill of interacting with these cautious birds. The next day brought more opportunities and lessons learned. We adjusted our tactics, moving locations to intercept a particularly vocal turkey. After a suspenseful wait and some strategic calling, I managed to harvest a fine turkey, overcoming obstacles like an awkward shooting position and a momentarily misplaced camera. Throughout the episode, we shared tips on turkey behavior, calling techniques, and the importance of adaptability in the field. We also reflected on the enjoyment of hunting together, the camaraderie. Matt had a close encounter with a turkey that came within 20 yards, but dense obstacles in the woods blocked his view, preventing a clear shot. As the turkey moved away, Matt tried to call it back but with no luck. Returning to the field to hunt without a blind, Matt's setup with decoys led to the turkey spotting him, causing him to miss the shot. In a last-ditch attempt, Matt took another shot, which turned into a successful harvest, concluding the hunt on a high note. ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt https://vparchery.com/collections/all VPA Code GTH10 Right now, there's a fantastic sale on the Rebel Platform that you won't want to miss. Today, we had a fantastic lineup with Co host Matt, Dr. Mike and Dr. Matt from the In Seezyn Podcast, and Dr. Matt joining us for a turkey season kickoff discussion. We dove into some hilarious and insightful turkey hunting stories, starting with Joe's first turkey hunt, which unexpectedly turned into a coyote hunt due to his less-than-stellar calling skills. Joe also shared the story of his first turkey harvest with a bow during the fall season, which was a unique experience compared to the spring hunts. Minkus, our seasoned turkey hunter, recounted his first successful turkey hunt, which was a mix of frustration and triumph. His story highlighted the learning curve involved in turkey hunting and the excitement that comes with finally bagging that first bird. Dr.Matt shared his first turkey hunting experience, which was a lesson in patience and the importance of staying still. Despite being so close to success, a small movement spooked the turkey away, but the experience left him hooked on turkey hunting. Dr.Mike shared my own first turkey hunting adventure, which was nothing short of a spectacle. With Minkus calling in a tom that put on an incredible show, I learned the hard way that patience is key, and sometimes you just have to wait for the perfect shot. We also touched on the challenges and peculiarities of hunting turkeys on public land, including stories of other hunters' antics and the unexpected sounds of Tannerite explosions. All in all, it was a great episode filled with laughter, learning moments, and a shared passion for turkey hunting. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the sport, there's always something new to learn and experience in the turkey woods. https://www.instagram.com/inseezynpodcast?igsh=cDE0bWExZmxiYjQ3 ► SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/generations_to_hunt_podcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@generationstohuntpodcast193 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Generationstohunt Our partner shoutout goes to Latitude Outdoors for their amazing gear, platforms, and saddles. Hey everyone, Matt here from Generations of the Hunt. This week, we had a special episode as Joe couldn't join us due to the arrival of his new baby. To keep things interesting, we invited Dr. Mike from the In Seezyn Podcast, who brought along a fascinating guest, Lindsey Thomas from the National Deer Association (NDA). For those who might remember, the NDA was formerly known as the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) before merging with the National Deer Alliance in 2020. Lindsey, serving as the Chief Communications Officer for the NDA, shared his insights on a groundbreaking study on buck bedding behavior conducted by Mississippi State University. Contrary to popular belief, the study found that bucks have many more bedding areas than previously thought, with some bucks using up to 87 different bedding areas! This challenges the common hunting strategy of targeting specific bedding sites. We also touched on the implications of deer management practices, particularly in Michigan. Lindsey highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced buck-to-doe ratio for a more intense and observable rutting season. He also discussed the biological and hunting impacts of skewed ratios, such as less effective rattling and grunting, fewer rubs and scrapes, and the potential for late-born fawns, which can be especially detrimental in northern climates. Lastly, we delved into the topic of doe harvest rates and how they're crucial for managing deer populations. Lindsey pointed out that Michigan has seen a decline in doe harvests, which could lead to an imbalance in the deer population. He suggested that hunters should consider venison donation programs as a way to manage doe populations while helping those in need. It was an enlightening conversation that shed light on deer behavior and management, and it's clear that there's much more to consider when it comes to hunting strategies and conservation efforts. Thanks to Lindsey for sharing his expertise, and to Dr. Mike for joining us this week. We'll be back next time with more from the world of hunting and wildlife management. Parker shared the incredible story of his hunt for a massive buck in Michigan. This deer, known as "Turkey Foot" due to its unique rack, was a true rarity in the state, making Parker's achievement all the more impressive. Parker, who grew up in a hunting family, had been actively managing their property for years, passing on younger bucks in the hopes of allowing them to grow into mature, trophy-worthy deer. This dedication to responsible hunting and deer management paid off when Turkey Foot made an appearance on their trail cameras. The family had actually spotted Turkey Foot the previous year, but decided to let him go after he broke off one of his antlers. They wanted to give him another chance to grow and reach his full potential. Little did they know that the following year, Turkey Foot would return with a rack that would surpass their wildest expectations. On opening day of gun season, Parker found himself in his hunting shack, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to encounter Turkey Foot. After a few hours of patiently watching and waiting, the massive buck finally appeared. he decided to pass, knowing he wanted to make a clean and ethical kill. Later in the day, Turkey Foot made another appearance, this time heading towards another hunter on their property. However, the buck changed direction and started moving towards Parker. With careful range-finding and precise timing, Parker took his shot when Turkey Foot presented the perfect opportunity. The buck ran off, and Parker anxiously waited to see if he had made a clean kill. This podcast episode not only showcased Parker's remarkable hunting story but also highlighted the importance of responsible deer management and the joy of hunting with family. Parker and his family's dedication to passing on younger bucks and allowing them to grow into mature deer is a testament to their commitment to the sport and the conservation of wildlife. Are you a fan of hunting? Have you ever considered going beagle hunting? If so, you're in for a treat! In a recent podcast episode, avid beagle hunter shared his experiences, tips, and stories about this thrilling activity. Let's dive into the transcript and explore the world of beagle hunting. AL Taylor mentioned that he grew up around dogs and spent his entire childhood surrounded by them. Their fathers were avid hunters, and were introduced to the world of hunting at a young age. This early exposure sparked his passion for beagle hunting, and he has continued the tradition into their adult lives. When it comes to training beagles for rabbit hunting, both hunters emphasized the importance of starting with a puppy. They recommended selecting a puppy that shows natural instincts, such as using its nose and being adventurous. Al mentioned using a stuffed animal rabbit with rabbit scent to introduce the puppies to the smell and get them excited about chasing it. As the puppies grow, they progress to live rabbits, either in starting pens or by attaching a tame rabbit to a rope in their own yard. This helps the dogs learn to follow the scent and develop their hunting skills. also mentioned the importance of running the dogs with older, more experienced dogs to learn from them. One challenge that both Al and Matt mentioned was dealing with dogs getting distracted by female dogs in heat. This can disrupt the hunting experience and cause dogs to lose focus. They recommended avoiding hunting with a male dog when a female is in heat to prevent distractions and maintain focus on the hunt. Another challenge they discussed was gun shyness in dogs. While some dogs may naturally be more sensitive to loud noises, they suggested desensitizing them by being loud around them and gradually introducing them to the sound of gunshots. This helps them associate the noise with positive experiences and reduces the likelihood of gun shyness. Both hunters emphasized the importance of using tracking collars, specifically the Garmin brand, for beagle hunting. These collars provide peace of mind and allow hunters to keep track of their dogs' locations, especially in dense woods or when they are chasing a rabbit. The collars also have additional features like lights and map cards, which enhance the hunting experience and ensure the safety of the dogs. While beagle hunting on public land, Al mentioned occasional encounters with people who don't understand the activity. Some people may not realize that rabbits don't adhere to property lines and may get upset if the dogs cross onto their land. emphasized the importance of being polite and respectful, but also highlighted that beagle hunters have just as much right to be out there as any other hunter. Beagle hunting is a thrilling and rewarding activity that allows hunters to connect with nature and witness the incredible skills of their dogs. From training puppie

Generation Hunt Podcast, host Joe and CEO of BDS Outdoors, Bradley Collings , One of the main issues Bradley highlights is the disparity between the benefits offered to disabled veterans and the limitations they face when it comes to hunting on public land. In the state of Tennessee, disabled veterans receive a discounted hunting license, but they still have to pay additional fees to hunt on public land. This seems unfair, especially when compared to the lifetime sportsman license that covers all aspects of hunting for Bradley's children. Bradley raises the question of why disabled veterans are not granted the same privileges as those with the lifetime sportsman license. He believes that if the state offers a discounted or free license to disabled veterans, it should cover all hunting activities, including access to public land. This would provide disabled veterans with the same opportunities as other hunters and ensure equal treatment. Furthermore, Bradley expresses his frustration with the declining fur market and the financial challenges faced by trappers. He discusses his goals for trapping, which include mitigating the predator population and protecting livestock and poultry. However, he acknowledges the difficulties in making a profit from trapping due to low fur prices. Despite this, Bradley remains committed to trapping and finding sustainable ways to manage the predator population. Bradley emphasizes the importance of family involvement in his future hunting endeavors. He plans to focus on hunting with his wife and children, nurturing their interest in the sport and passing on his knowledge and skills. Bradley also mentions his desire to support his brother, who is a disabled veteran as well, by purchasing a sportsman license for him. https://www.instagram.com/bdsoutdoor?igsh=anZjcXZydHJzOWd4

Joe and avid hunter, Josh Borrow , shares his experiences and insights about hunting whitetail deer in Ohio. From the adrenaline rush of spotting a buck to the challenges of navigating the terrain, Josh provides a glimpse into the world of whitetail hunting. we will delve into the key takeaways from the podcast episode and explore the importance of effective deer management practices. One of the standout features of hunting in Ohio, as highlighted by Josh, is the diverse and challenging terrain. With hilly landscapes and thick underbrush, Ohio presents a unique hunting experience compared to other regions. The dense briar patches and thick hardwoods make it essential for hunters to be prepared for the physical demands of traversing the terrain. Josh emphasizes the thrill of the predator-prey game that comes with hunting whitetail deer. Understanding deer patterns and strategically positioning oneself to go undetected requires careful planning and observation. From identifying funnel points to studying wind patterns, the chess match between hunter and deer adds an element of excitement to the hunt. One crucial lesson Josh learned during his hunting journey is the importance of scent control. He noticed a significant difference in deer sightings when hunting with the wind in his favor versus when the wind was iffy. This realization led him to prioritize scent control, which ultimately increased his chances of encountering deer. Paying attention to wind direction and investing in scent control measures can greatly enhance the hunting experience. One aspect that sets Ohio apart from other states is its deer management practices. Ohio hunters take great pride in managing their deer population and selectively harvesting mature bucks. This approach has led to an increase in the quality of deer found in the state. By practicing restraint and waiting for larger, more mature bucks, hunters contribute to the overall health and sustainability of the deer population. Michigan's Deer Management: In contrast, Michigan's deer management practices have faced criticism due to the two-buck license system. This system often leads to the overharvesting of younger bucks, hindering the growth of mature deer populations. To improve the quality of deer in Michigan, hunters must adopt a more selective approach and focus on harvesting mature bucks while also targeting does to maintain a balanced population. Josh's experiences hunting whitetail deer in Ohio provides valuable insights into the thrill and challenges of the sport. From the unique terrain to the strategic game of predator and prey, whitetail hunting offers an exhilarating experience for hunters. Additionally, the importance of effective deer management practices is highlighted, emphasizing the need for selective harvesting and sustainable population control. By adopting these practices, hunters can contribute to the preservation and growth of healthy deer

Nate Rozeveld , an experienced hunter from Michigan, shared his hunting journey and insights into the unique challenges and differences he has encountered while hunting in his home state compared to other states. Background and Hunting Origins: Nate grew up in a hunting family and was introduced to hunting at a young age. With hunting enthusiasts on both sides of his family, it was only natural for Nate to follow in their footsteps. He began hunting small game at the age of 12 and progressed to bow hunting and rifle hunting for deer. Hunting was ingrained in his family's traditions, and there was never a question of whether Nate would become a hunter. The Influence of Quality Deer Management: Nate's family embraced the principles of Quality Deer Management (QDM) early on, implementing a self-imposed four-point rule for their tags. This approach aimed to target mature bucks and improve the overall deer population. Growing up with this mindset, Nate witnessed both successful hunts and missed opportunities, as he learned to differentiate between younger and older bucks. The Differences in Hunting Michigan vs. Other States: Nate's hunting experiences in other states, such as Illinois and Iowa, revealed significant differences compared to Michigan. One notable distinction was the higher number of mature bucks in these states, resulting in more aggressive behavior during the rut. In contrast, Michigan's deer population, while abundant, often exhibited less aggression and territorial behavior due to a higher ratio of does to bucks. The Impact of Hunting Pressure: Hunting pressure plays a crucial role in shaping deer behavior. Nate observed that Michigan's deer, subjected to higher hunting pressure, displayed more cautious and skittish behavior compared to deer in less pressured areas. This heightened wariness made it challenging to employ certain hunting tactics, such as rattling antlers or aggressive calling, which often proved successful in other states. The Importance of Property Management: Nate emphasized the significance of property management in Michigan. By collaborating with neighboring hunters and implementing QDM practices, he and his fellow hunters have seen improvements in the age structure of bucks on their properties. This has led to more aggressive behavior among mature bucks and increased opportunities for successful hunts. The Thrills and Heartbreak of Early Season Hunting: Nate shared his preference for hunting the first two weeks of October, a period often overlooked by many hunters. By strategically targeting specific properties and utilizing trail cameras to identify early-season patterns, he has been able to capitalize on the behavior of mature bucks during this time. However, he plans to conduct a thorough analysis of each broadhead's performance through a post-hunt examination, documenting the shot placement, lethality, and other factors. The Michigan Hunting Camp Experience: Bradley expresses his excitement about joining the Michigan hunting camp and meeting fellow hunters from the Bowhunter Chronicles community. He shares his initial hesitation about spending a week in the woods with strangers but quickly realized the camaraderie and shared passion for hunting made it a memorable experience. The camp provided an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences. Managing Expectations: While acknowledging that the hunting area may not be known for producing trophy-sized bucks, Bradley emphasizes the importance of managing expectations. He highlights the significance of enjoying the hunting experience and being open to the possibility of harvesting any legal deer. The camp's focus on camaraderie and shared experiences rather than trophy hunting created a supportive and inclusive environment. Unpredictable Weather and Challenging Conditions: The podcast episode also touches upon the challenges posed by unpredictable weather and its impact on deer movement. In a recent episode of the Generation Top podcast, hosts Matt and Joe welcomed special guest Elliot Hubbard to discuss his extensive habitat improvement projects on his 113-acre property. From food plots to timber management, Elliot's dedication to enhancing the land for wildlife has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. In this blog post, we will delve into the key takeaways from the podcast episode and explore the importance of habitat management for a thriving wildlife population. Creating Strategic Food Plots: Elliot's primary focus was on establishing food plots that would not only provide sustenance for the deer but also help in regenerating the timber on his property. With a high deer density in the area, Elliot recognized the need to supplement the natural food sources and occupy the deer's time on his land. By strategically placing food plots near bedding areas and neighboring agricultural fields, he aimed to keep the deer on his property during daylight hours, increasing his chances of encountering the bucks he was targeting. Balancing Perennials and Annuals: Elliot shared his approach to food plot composition, which involved a mix of perennial and annual crops. While annuals provide immediate food sources, perennials offer long-term benefits, especially for doe and fawn populations. By allocating around 20% of his food plots to perennials, Elliot ensured that the does and fawns had access to food throughout the summer. However, he also emphasized the need to monitor deer density and adjust the ratio of perennials to annuals accordingly. The Challenge of Displaced Bedding: One crucial aspect Elliot highlighted was the potential displacement of bedding areas due to an excessive number of food plots. While food plots are enticing for deer, they can disrupt natural bedding patterns and push bucks away from the area. Elliot stressed the importance of observing deer movement and adapting food plot placement to avoid displacing bedding areas. By understanding where the deer want to go and enhancing those areas with food and cover, he aimed to keep the deer on his property during daylight hours. The Importance of Doe Harvest: Elliot emphasized the need for a balanced deer population and the significance of doe harvest. With a high deer density in his area, he recognized the importance of reducing the doe population to maintain a healthy buck-to-doe ratio. By shooting 78 does in the previous year, Elliot and his hunting partners aimed to break even in terms of population control. He encouraged hunters to prioritize doe harvest to ensure a sustainable and balanced deer herd. Conclusion: Elliot Hubbard's habitat improvement projects serve as an inspiration for hunters and landowners looking to enhance their properties for wildlife. By strategically managing food plots, balancing perennial and annual crops, and prioritizing doe harvest, Elliot aims to create a thriving ecosystem that benefits not
