This week, Marissa is joined by Nadia Kouraytem, a USU professor in the College of Engineering. This episode is jampacked. Marissa and Nadia cover Nadia's unique career path, her current research projects, and, as a speaker of four languages, her motivation to be and the benefits of being bilingual. Additionally, they dive into topics like characteristics and skills of successful mechanical engineers, which include curiosity and drive, utilizing internships to explore fields you'd like to pursue, and what Nadia loves about about being a professor. Nadia has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering with 7 years experimental research experience investigating fluids using ultra-high speed imaging and mechanical properties of additively manufactured metallic structures in extreme conditions. High quality experiences with various industries (energy, water, aviation) and academia have enhanced her ability to adapt to extreme (oil rig, all male) diverse conditions (109 nationalities at KAUST) and equipment (1 million frames/s camera), to absorb complex knowledge faster (a whole new field in a single internship), to help her become a top performer and through time and resource management be able to deliver high quality results. She is actively involved in the solutions of complex problems both at work and her community, and perfecting her leadership, entrepreneurial and communications skills. This week, Marissa met with Alice Pack, USU alum and solutions engineer at Lucid. In their discussion, they touch on what it was like to graduate in spring of 2020 amidst the beginnings of the pandemic, how crucial networking was for Alice during her job search, and how the professional world differs from the academic world. On top of that, Alice dives into topics like the ins and outs of solutions engineering, finding "flow" in her work, how interpersonal skills have played a role in her technical job, and other careers of interest. Alice is a Solution Engineer at Lucid (Lucidchart + Lucidspark + Lucidchart Cloud Insights), a SaaS company with 12+ million users worldwide. Every day she connects with teams across the globe to help see and build the future using the Lucid Suite. She graduated from the Biological Engineering (BE) department at Utah State University. During that time she added a Computer Science minor, worked as a Public Speaking TA, and helped with the ABET accreditation process for the BE department.

Mitch is a technical leader focused on quality and rapid results, agile work practices, model-based engineering, and metrics-driven management. He received both his bachelors and masters degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Utah State University, then went on to complete his PhD in Modeling and Simulation at University of Alabama in Huntsville. Over the course of his career, Mitch has filled many roles, which include engineering manager, systems engineer, technical fellow, and director.

Kortni, a 2019 USU grad, currently works at USU Extension as a Utah 4-H Agriculture and Animal Science Assistant. Kortni is a passionate communicator interested in working in the Agricultural Communications and Journalism field, with a desire to educate youth in the 4-H and FFA Programs.

Marissa starts her dive into the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS) with Heather Lieber, a Registered Dietician at Harmons Grocery. This episode is jam-packed with useful information, including valuable out-of-classroom experiences, must-have's and nice-to-have's for dieticians, effective mediums for accessible nutrition education, and Heather's biggest lesson learned. Heather made an impact on the USU Logan campus during her time as a student by fulfilling various roles, such as A Team Student Orientation member, Undergraduate Teaching Fellow and Teaching Assistant, and Academic Senator for CAAS. During that time, she was also a Class Instructor at Citrus Pear Dinners and held internships with University of Utah Health, Washington County School District, and Harmons Grocery. She began working as a full-time registered dietician at Harmons Grocery in 2019, where she maintains the Dietitians Choice product tagging program; delivers nutrition workshops on a variety of topics; develops and delivers themes, menus, and education for cooking classes with customers; and implements motivational interviewing skills in nutrition counseling appointments. Heather is passionate about motivational interviewing and combining the culinary arts with nutrition principles to diminish barriers to a healthy lifestyle.

To wrap up the deep dive into the Caine College of the Arts, Marissa discusses the ins and outs of interior architecture and design with USU alumni and professor of 20 years, Darrin Brooks. Together, they cover the technical aspects of USU's Interior Architecture and Design program (and why it's ranked #7th in the nation), how great design/architecture can facilitate connection, what it means to feed your design soul, and so, so much more. You won't want to miss this jam-packed episode! Darrin Brooks is a professor of interior design. He has received multiple design commissions, appeared in juried shows, and received prestigious design and service awards. His research at Utah State identifies branding strategies relating to the décor changes in the Oval Office from 1934 to the present. The Caine College of the Arts recognized Brooks as the 2018 “Teacher of the Year” and the “International Professor of the Year” in 2014. His mantra is “Design like you give a damn.” Brooks is also the owner of Brooks Design Associates, a firm specializing both residential-commercial interior design and both set-costume design for theatre. Before joining the faculty at USU, he owned a high-end residential design firm in Greenwich, Connecticut. He has received numerous awards for his work, including set and costume designs being displayed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In addition, his work has appeared in various magazines and journals including; Bedroom and Bath, Journal of Interior Design, Sources and Design, Southern Accents, Vermont, and Greenwich magazines.

For our first Friday Face-to-Face of season 3, we chat with TJ Davis - perhaps better known as the no-good Juanito Bandito. Together, we cover everything from entering the creative field and gaining experience to taking atypical pathways and making opportunities. TJ is a writer, director, and entrepreneur. He has written, directed, and starred in numerous shows on the Pickleville stage over the past two decades, including the famous Juanito Bandito series. TJ and his wife Erin live in Smithfield, UT with their five handsome sons. As the first Dean of Students for College of Eastern Idaho (CEI), Mike established a variety of new and restructured student services, setting the agenda for the Student Affairs division over the past three years. He’s helped lead the charge on a variety of new departments and services, including student mental health counseling services, disability resources, enrollment management, a Title IX office, and student conduct; he also revamped several programs and assisted in the development of new ones. He also currently teaches ethics courses at CEI. As well as an administrator, Mike is an education psychology researcher; he will complete his PhD in Education from Utah State University in 2021. His research explores the psychology of hope in new freshmen. He also holds two master’s degrees, one in History from BYU (2011) and another in Higher Education and Student Affairs from USU (2017). Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in History from BYU-Idaho (2005) as has over 13 years of experience in the classroom setting teaching World History, American History, Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities. Mike is dedicated to improving the student experience at College of Eastern Idaho and improving student enrollment and retention. Dr. John Armstrong is Southern Virginia University’s Willis J. Smith Professor of Philosophy—an honor that acknowledges a senior professor for outstanding scholarship, teaching, and citizenship. Dr. Armstrong founded SVU’s philosophy program in 2002 and has been with the university since 1998. He has served as associate provost, coordinator of institutional accreditation, and chair of the humanities faculty. Dr. Armstrong has published in top journals on Plato, Aristotle, and Epicureanism, teaches courses on ethics, political philosophy, early Chinese philosophy, and ancient Greek and Roman philosophy. He is working on new English translations of Aristotle’s ethical works and some of Plato’s dialogues for college students and the general public. Captain Kent King started his career with an interest in Hotel administration which led to a 12 year career in the hospitality business. Eventually he wanted to own his own business and started a mortgage company that opened offices in Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Arizona. He then desired the ability to fly himself to his offices so he enrolled in an aviation program and became a pilot. After falling in love with aviation he went on to receive a second bachelor's degree in aviation science, eventually becoming a commercial airline pilot and he flew for seven years. As a part of his retirement, Kent decided to teach at USU which pushed him to finished his Masters of Aviation in 2019. Currently, he is a Professional Practice Instructor for Utah State University. Amria has always been involved in the food world ever since she was a teenager working at a Farmer's Market Booth selling noodles and dumplings. This experience opened her eyes to some major food access disparities. As a student at USU she started volunteering with Campus Kitchen to reduce campus food waste and also give back to students. Amria and a friend started the USU Gleaning Team, renamed Cache Community Gleaning, last year also in an effort to reduce food waste and food insecurity. SNAC is the central hub of all of the food programs on campus and she is excited to be a part of managing it during her senior year as the Director of the Student Nutrition Access Center. Amria helps us wrap up season one and 2020 by sharing a thought-provoking student success story of how volunteering shaped her career path!

Logan works for Verizon Media as a Manager on the Global Public Policy team, where he focuses on the business’s government relations in key markets such as India, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Additionally, he leads their US State government affairs work. Shawn earned his bachelor's degree in multidisciplinary studies with an emphasis in employment relations from Michigan State University. He was really involved in extracurriculars while in school and got his first job working in college admissions. This position eventually led to his becoming a college recruiter for Bank of America. He then went on to work in the HR field for 23 years at The Field Museum and became CHRO there. He now serves as the executive director for NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers which has 13,000 members and represents over 3,000 university college career development and company talent acquisitions professionals. Eric earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and music then his master's degree in higher education administration all at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During grad school, Eric completed an assistantship with his university’s Career Center and Business School. In those roles he helped students and alumni with career planning and the general transition to through and beyond university life. These experiences landed his next job as a Career Coach at the University of Utah immediately after graduate school. In addition to coaching students, Eric gained valuable leadership and project management skills and eventually took on the role of an Assistant Director. Through this role he had the opportunity to supervise and mentor a group of student ambassadors. Outside of work Eric actively volunteered within his church. His connections with Capital Church along with his previous work experience led to him being recruited for his current position as the director of Connection and Volunteer Development at Capital Church. After attending business school at BYU and the University of Chicago for an MBA, Welcome went on to work in business development for Dole Food Company where he was on the team that launched packaged salads, baby peeled carrots and several new fresh produce items. He later became President and CEO of the Washington Apple Commission where he helped launch fresh-cut apples. He helped start the largest marketing agency of fresh apples and cherries and is still associated with that company and its transition to fifth-generation prosperity. He took a five-year hiatus to head a global division for Dow Chemical where his team tripled that business. He has been called one of the best business analysts in the produce industry and has been a keynote speaker at dozens of conferences. Welcome has traveled globally for decades, working in over 50 countries and nearly every state in the U.S. He has been a board member for several charities, industry organizations and businesses, including one charity that grants 400 college scholarships per year. He also served on the admissions committee for the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business for nine years. Megan earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology minoring in Anthropology and Women’s studies at Skidmore College. While at Skidmore, Megan worked in residential life and studied abroad in South Africa. After graduating, Megan taught English to international students in Tanzania and Boston for a total of three years. She went on to earn her master’s degree in International Education from the School for International Training Graduate Institute and became an onsite intern for a study abroad program in Nicaragua for a year. She then joined the University of Utah as a Learning Abroad Coordinator and after a year and a half, transitioned to working in the Career & Professional Development Center at the U, where she’s been for three years. Matt attended Utah State University to earn his bachelor's degree in Business Administration and minored in Marketing. He currently works as the Employee Experience Manager at Malouf. He oversees the collection and use of all employee feedback for over 500 employees. He leads the deployment of employee-happiness programs and evaluates initiative impacts. Matt was a recipient of the 2020 Utah Business HR professional of the year award, and has been instrumental in securing Malouf as a seven-time nationally ranked best place to work. After graduating from USU with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences and minors in Marketing and Sociology Oz became the operations manager for Adventure Tour Company in Alaska. During his time there, he gained valuable experience with HR, marketing, sales, growth/expansion, and day to day operations. After five years he decided to try something new and began working in the career services realm for Eagle Gate College. Eventually he decided to leave Eagle Gate College and joined Millennial Medical as the Director of Sales. After one year he bought ownership of the company and continues with it to this day.
