In this special bumper two-hour bastard of a podcast, I’m finally joined again by the brilliant Kate Gray, who returns due to popular demand. Engage ear canals: https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-046/tired-old-hack-podcast-046.mp3 In episode 46 Kate and I discuss the backlash to Pokémon Legends: Arceus’s graphics and generally chat about what it’s like when you review a triple-A game and are eventually subjected to a backlash. It’s basically a big moan to make us feel better. Don’t worry though, we also find time to make jokes about Shigeru Miyamoto smothering people in their sleep. How to listen If you’re just listening while browsing, the podcast was at the top of this article. Click play and you’re off and running. The Tired Old Hack Podcast is back, and it may just be the most exciting one yet. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-044/tired-old-hack-podcast-044.mp3 I’m joined by none other than the legendary Dominik Diamond, the host of the greatest video game TV show ever made, GamesMaster. Dominik is involved in a massive new book called GamesMaster: An Oral History, which currently has an ongoing Kickstarter campaign . Brilliantly, it met its target in just one day, so if you pledge you will definitely get it. Dominik very kindly sat down with yer man for a full hour to talk not just about the book, but such other random topics as: • how many celebrities who were on GamesMaster have now died • the best thing about his hometown of Arbroath • his views on the current state of Celtic football club • his favourite province in Canada • finally, the five games that have meant the most to him in his life I’m so grateful to have had Dominik on the show – I’ve been a fan of his ever since a nine-year-old me first saw GamesMaster back in 1992, so I really hope you enjoy this episode. After much waiting and hype, we’ve finally got our first look at some next-gen game footage. Well, sort of. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-042_202005/tired-old-hack-podcast-042.mp3 Microsoft has just shown off what it called the first ‘gameplay’ for Xbox Series X, and while the majority of it of it doesn’t quite count as gameplay it still gave us an idea of what sort of graphical quality to expect. I’ve taken all 13 games and broken them down for you so you can find out more about them and hear what I have to think. This podcast has also been designed to be played alongside the actual video, if you want to see what I’m talking about too. I’ll have a YouTube version up shortly but until then you can watch the official video here : pause it when the countdown ends and play it when I do my own countdown on the podcast. The return of Tired Old Hack also means the return of the Tired Old Hack podcast! https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-040/tired-old-hack-podcast-040.mp3 After a little recap on what I’ve been up over the past six months of downtime, yer man takes a look at today’s claim that Nintendo is planning to port two more Wii U games over to the Switch in 2020. I then take on a bunch of listener questions, covering topics as diverse as the all-digital future of gaming, whether Nintendo will have a quiet first six months of 2020 and where the WWE 2K series can go now after its latest shambolic effort. My book is finally out in the wild , so it’s time to tell the story behind it. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-038/tired-old-hack-podcast-038.mp3 Podcast 38 covers the entire process behind the NES Encyclopedia, from the initial concept all the way up to the book’s release and what’s coming next. Some very silly hings have been said in the world of video gaming this week, so let’s talk about just how silly they were. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-033/tired-old-hack-podcast-033.mp3 First up, I comment on a 2K exec’s claim that microtransactions are an “unfortunate reality of modern gaming”, as if they’re some sort of given that can’t be stopped. After that, it’s onto the Sony CEO’s latest bizarre reason for shunning cross-platform play for PS4-owning Fortnite players. Finally, I take on a bunch of listeners’ questions, including my top tips for which games to play when you’ve got a newborn baby like I currently do. This week, someone at IGN stole someone else’s review, and was fired for it. Fun fact: he also stole one of mine! Let’s podcast the piss out of it. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-032/tired-old-hack-podcast-032.mp3 First up, I take a look at yesterdays’ Smash Bros Ultimate Direct, and break down all the major announcements. After that, it’s onto a mini-rant about the (now former) IGN writer’s plagiarism scandal, as well as my own personal thoughts on him also stealing my own work. A warning in advance: this episode’s a bit swearer than usual, for obvious reasons. How to listen If you’re just listening while browsing, the podcast was at the top of this article. Time for Nintendo to show us what’s in its locker. And this year, it’s Smash Bros. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-031/tired-old-hack-podcast-031.mp3 This is the fifth part in a series covering the major conferences at E3 2018, following EA , Microsoft , Ubisoft and Sony . As has been the case in previous years, Nintendo’s E3 presentation was a pre-recorded video lasting roughly half an hour. However, this time there was a far larger focus on a single game, in this case Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Keep your ears out for a final sixth podcast at the end of the week, recapping E3 in general. Sony’s just had its E3 conference, and it’s fair to say it was a bit of a divisive one. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-030/tired-old-hack-podcast-030.mp3 This is the fourth part in a five-part series covering the major conferences at E3 2018, following EA , Microsoft and Ubisoft . Sony’s conference consisted of two distinct halves, and it was the first that drew the most ire from fans. Was its odd structure enough to ruin the entire show though? Have a listen to hear my take on it. The final podcast will came later today, when Nintendo’s E3 showcase gets the same critical eye. As well as chatting about GlesGames, we also talk about Labo, the Xbox Game Pass and God Of War, and Simon and Gav also list the five games that have meant the most to them. Oh, and there are also far too many jokes about having sex in a shed. The next GlesGames takes place on 24 February 2018 at the Trades Hall in Glasgow. Head over here to buy tickets ! Sorry folks, this one’s a proper rant. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-019/tired-old-hack-podcast-019.mp3 In episode 19 of the Tired Old Hack podcast yer man Scullion’s had enough of review conspiracy theories. After discussing some of the most recent gaming news (including Nintendo’s latest attempt to break into China) and explaining my VHS project in a bit more depth, I go on a wee bit of a rant about the reaction to my latest review for Nintendo Life, NBA 2K18 . I apologise in advance: I don’t really like being too negative but this has really wound me up so I feel the need to address it. It gets a bit sweary too, so you’ve been warned! Time to get serious. Well, sort of. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-017_201709/tired-old-hack-podcast-017.mp3 In episode 18 of the Tired Old Hack podcast yer man Scullion goes solo to discuss a couple of things. First I address the awkward but important topic of PewDiePie’s racism furore, before discussing something more personal: my recent Metroid: Samus Returns review on Nintendo Life, how it came about and my views on the freelance process and bias accusations in general. Well, well, well. Look what we have here. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-010/tired-old-hack-podcast-010.mp3 Yes, after years of ‘joke’ references to Night Trap (like adding it to my 30 Best DS games article even though it was never on DS), yer man Scullion has finally been vindicated with the incredible news that a brand new, remastered version of the niche ’90s FMV game is coming to PS4 and Xbox One to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Even better than that, I’ve known about it for a wee while. In fact, I recorded a podcast with the remaster’s developer, the lovely Tyler Hogle, more than a month ago in advance of its announcement, just for you lovely people. I can now finally bring that podcast to you, in order that you may ‘get hype’, as today’s youth say. And if you aren’t familiar with the game, you may want to watch the video feature I made about it a while back first, so you know why I love it so much. Night Trap is actually coming. It’s been a month. A month! Quickly, fill your ears: https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-007/tired-old-hack-podcast-007.mp3 Episode 7 of the Tired Old Hack podcast is here, as I take a rare one-night break from my mission to review every Switch launch game. In this episode I’m once again joined by my wife Louise as we talk about the Switch again (sorry haters), but then go on to discuss other non-Nintendo matters like PlayStation Now, ToeJam & Earl and achievement systems. Having Louise on means another instalment of The Year Of Louise-y, and this time Snipperclips is the game I try to get her addicted to. Do I manage it? You’ll need to listen to find out. Put this in your ears and smoke it. or something. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-006/tired-old-hack-podcast-006.mp3 Episode 6 of the Tired Old Hack podcast features the conclusion of my two-part interview with former ONM, OXM and CVG journalist Mike Jackson. If you haven’t heard episode 5 (which had part 1) yet, you’d best listen to that first. This time we properly get into the Switch, discussing the launch games and what we think of the software line-up in general. Ultimately, this leads to the inevitable as two enormous Mario fans draw their attention to Super Mario Odyssey. Wait until you hear my idea for the ending: it will blow the piss right out of your bladder. Note: As with the last episode, an issue with my Skype recording software meant that on occasion my microphone would make a static noise. This will be fixed in future episodes. Sorry for the mild unpleasantness. How to listen If you’re just listening while browsing, the podcast was at the top of this article. Click play and you’re off and running. A podcast, you say? Get stuck into this one. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-005/tired-old-hack-podcast-005.mp3 Episode 5 of the Tired Old Hack podcast is the first in a two-part special in which I’m joined by my lovely friend Mike Jackson. Mike and I go back over a decade: he was a writer on Nintendo: The Official Magazine, which was the UK’s official Nintendo publication before it moved to Future Publishing and became ONM (which is when I joined). Over the years he worked for Official Xbox Magazine and CVG, before moving to Las Vegas to live the high life there. He remains a massive Nintendo fan though, so it should be no surprise that much of our conversation is about the upcoming Switch. However, there are also some ridiculous anecdotes about working for Nintendo: The Official Magazine which really do have to be heard to be believed. Note: This was the first podcast I’ve done that consisted of a Skype call. An issue with my Skype recording software meant that on occasion my microphone would make a static noise. This will be present in this episode and the next (since it’s a two-parter) but will be fixed in future episodes. Sorry for the mild unpleasantness. It sounds to me like you could do with some video game chattery. Indulge, human. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-004/tired-old-hack-podcast-004.mp3 In episode 4 of the Tired Old Hack podcast I’m once again joined by my non-gaming wife Louise as we look at the week’s gaming news and answer listener questions. Topics this week include: • Resident Evil VII DLC – is it fair enough or a bit of a cash-in? • Nintendo’s financial reports – looking good or time to worry? • Will PS VR be a flop? • What does Louise think is the best and worst thing about my job? • What I think of people who think 30fps is ‘unplayable’ • In this The Year Of Louisey, Louise tries out the 2013 Castle Of Illusion remake How to listen If you’re just listening while browsing, the podcast was at the top of this article. Still craving Switch discussion? Good gravy, you insatiable fiends. Fine, here’s some more. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-003/tired-old-hack-podcast-003.mp3 Following the second episode with Kate Gray, I got a load more Switch questions over Twitter, so I decided to extend my Switch coverage over to a second podcast. This time, to dispense with the frivolities, we go pure Q&A and kick things off right away with your questions. By ‘we’ I’m referring to myself and this week’s guest, Daily Express and Daily Star games reviewer Meg Bethany Read . If you still haven’t had your fill of Switch chat, get stuck in. Well, that first podcast went well. So well, in fact, that here’s another one for your beautiful earholes. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-002/tired-old-hack-podcast-002.mp3 Episode 1 eventually pushed the Tired Old Hack podcast into the iTunes Top 10 Video Game Podcasts chart for a brief moment: given the relative small size of the site compared to other well-established publications (and the fact that at the time of writing it’s still up there at number 11) I’m delighted with that. This second episode was recorded the day after I went hands-on with the Nintendo Switch for the first time, so naturally that makes it a Switch special. To ensure it wasn’t just an hour and a half of my Scottish drawl, though, I enlisted the help of my awesome friend Kate Gray as my first ever* special podcast guest. *(well, first ever guest who wasn’t made to be on it because they’re married to me) This also makes the episode a sort of ONM special of sorts, because I was the Official Nintendo Magazine’s first ever staff writer and Kate was its last ever one. So in a way, ONM may be dead, but given we’re talking the Switch you can consider this a sort of return of the ONM Podcast in some form. Sort of. For a while, folk have been asking me to do a Tired Old Hack podcast. Well, get your gums wrapped around this wee bastard. https://archive.org/download/tired-old-hack-podcast-001-final/tired-old-hack-podcast-001-final.mp3 What you see above you is the pilot episode of the Tired Old Hack podcast. An hour and 20 minutes of gaming goodness (hopefully) recorded just for your lovely earholes. And they’re looking particularly lovely today, if I do say so myself. Within the confines of episode 1, you can expect to hear: • A brief recap of who I am and my career to date (for those who stumble upon this episode through iTunes in the future and don’t know me) • My first ever guest interviewee: my wife Louise Scullion, who definitely wanted to do this podcast and wasn’t just roped in because she was the only person available at short notice • A look at recent gaming news, including attempts at hacking the NES Classic, the unreleased Mega Blox Halo game and the news that Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer is getting its own TV series • Your questions answered, including a lengthy discussion on what I’m hoping will be revealed at the upcoming Nintendo Switch event • The first part of my regular series, The Year Of Louise-y, in which I try to find a game my non-gaming wife can get addicted to.
