California, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey and New York all reported more than 1,000 new cases on Tuesday, adding to the over 189,000 cases in the U.S. Maine and Texas announce “stay at home orders” for the month of April. Louisiana has extended theirs. The White House announced that even with social distancing measures, the virus could kill up to 240,000 in the U.S. The Army has issued a voluntary recall to about 10,000 members with specific medical skills. Small business owners, effected by COVID-19, will be able to apply for loans starting Friday as part of the 2 Trillion-dollar stimulus package. The Governor of California said based on modeling, the peak number of cases in his state will hit in mid-May.
The Secretary General of The United Nations said “Covid-19 is the greatest test that we have faced together since the formation of the United Nations”. The U.N. is calling for a coordinated, international response to ramp up health care spending and cushion the blow to people around the world who have been hurt by the sharp economic downturn, reports the New York Times. Italy will extend lockdown measures through April 13th. Indonesia will turn a former war refugee camp on an uninhabited island in to a hospital for COVID-19 patients, relays The Guardian. China has started including asymptomatic cases in their reporting, leading to a large increase in cases there on Wednesday, according to their National Health Commission. A government official in Saudi Arabia is asking Muslims around the world to delay their annual pilgrimage to Mecca in late July, due to concerns over virus spread.
